Aidene's research investigates the potential impact of implementing internal design thinking training programmes to develop innovation capabilities within a national Irish retailer. Aideen also has a great interest in the world of technology and learning about new and exciting devices and systems being built by industry. Aideen hopes to see more women join in the passion of learning about IT!

Aoife O’Dwyer is a 3rd year undergraduate studying Marine Electrotechnology in the National Maritime College of Ireland. She is an ETO cadet with Chevron Shipping Company. Aoife spent nine months at sea during her cadetship, based on the US West Coast and in the Pacific. While at sea, she trained on low voltage and high voltage systems, sailing on oil tankers and LNG carriers. Aoife hopes to graduate this summer and complete her Dept. Of Transport Oral Exams to qualify as an Electro Technical Officer.

Catherine Sheehan is a postgraduate student and part-time postgraduate lecturer in the Dept. of Sport, Leisure and Childhood Studies. Catherine's undergraduate studies and background is in the field of Early Childhood Education and Care, with her PhD focusing on the area of Child Psychology and Trauma Informed Practice. Her research is centred on the Design, Implementation, Evaluation, and Validation of a training programme for Early Childhood Education and Care Practitioners’ in the area of Trauma Informed Practice. Catherine is very passionate about high quality early learning experiences for children, as well as adequate trauma training for practitioners in the ECEC profession.

DR. MARIA KOTLYAR
MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE FELLOW

MTU CAPPA CENTRE FOR ADVANCED PHOTONICS & PROCESS ANALYSIS

Dr. Maria Kotlyar graduated from Samara State University, Russia in 2001. She obtained her PhD in physics in the field of photonic crystals from the University of St Andrews, Scotland in 2005. Maria continued her research at the University of St Andrews as a Postdoctoral researcher for several years before taking a carrier break to raise her children. On moving to Ireland, she won a Marie-Skladowska Curie fellowship on entangle photon pair generation and started working in April 2018 at the Centre of Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis (CAPPA), CIT. Maria is currently working in the field of nanophotonics and uses the state-of-the-art fabrication facilities at Tyndall and the advanced characterization labs at CAPPA to carry out her research. Maria is also involved in another EU funded project OPTIPHI which is a double-doctorate involving 5 European institutes and 14 PhD students, 8 of which will be registered at MTU. The work for this project is focusing on developing optical sensors for environmental sensing, agri-food analysis and industrial food monitoring.

Dr. Rosemary Rea completed her undergraduate studies in both CIT (Certificate in Applied Biology; Diploma in Cell and Molecular Biology) and UCC (BSc (Hons) Biochemistry) before graduating with a PhD in Microbiology from UCC in 2005. Following time spent in the biotechnology industry, she joined the lecturing team in the Department of Biological Sciences, CIT in 2010. Currently, Rosemary is the director of the Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Degree Programme, work place coordinator and a Principal Investigator in the Centre for Research in Advanced Therapeutic Engineering (CREATE) at MTU.

Dr. Sharon Butler was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. She obtained a BSc. in Applied Physics and Instrumentation in Cork Institute of Technology (now MTU) and subsequently spent some time working in industry as an Automation Engineer. She recently completed her Ph.D. degree as part of the CAPPA group in MTU under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Hegarty. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the CAPPA group working on research focused on semiconductor hybrid photonic crystal lasers and silicon for applications in optical communications and sensing.

Eunice Olaniyan is a PhD Student at MTU Cork, researching the promotion of healthy ageing through the development of plant-based snack foods. During her time at CIT/MTU, she has completed an Honours degree in Nutrition & Science, was awarded a Faculty Scholar award as well as a Risam PhD Scholarship. During her time in college, Eunice co-founded the Africa Society and was vice-chairperson & secretary for two years, volunteered as a Peer Assistant Learning & Support Leader, worked as a Student Leader for for years, and completed the Exxcel Female Entrepreneurship program in the Rubicon Centre. Alongside her PhD, Eunice is a member of the European Medical Writers' Association; and a freelance Scientific Writer on Upwork where she has written for many food and health businesses, blogs, and consulted for start-ups. Lastly, Eunice is a content creator on YouTube/Instagram where she uploads educational nutrition information and cooking videos.

IRENE HOGAN

Irene Hogan is a lecturer in the Department of Sport, Leisure & Childhood Studies at Munster Technological University (MTU) and a PhD candidate at Mary Immaculate College Limerick under the supervision of Dr. Richard Bowles and Dr. Niamh Kitching. Irene’s area of research is women in coaching and in particular volunteer women coaches in the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA). Having completed her MSc in Applied Sport & Exercise Science in 2012 and focusing on the role of gender in coaching in her thesis along with her background as a player, coach, committee member and coach developer within the LGFA she has a unique perspective and understanding of volunteer women coaches. Irene’s coaching experience in both LGFA and camogie was predominantly with her club Bride Rovers in Cork and MTU, Cork.

Lauryn Murray is a 1st year student studying Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at MTU Cork. She first attended the MTU Empowering Women event last year as a marketing student. Having attended last year's event and hearing the key speakers discuss the gender disparities within the STEM sectors, Lauryn felt inspired to explore the science courses available within the college. Lauryn has seen first-hand the significant impact of MTU's Empowering Women event on female students and values the recognition women receive for their work during the event while also providing a platform to share their stories. Lauryn currently serves as a first-year representative for the MTU Cork WiSTEM Society (Women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). The society inspires female students to reach their full potential and helps them to build a professional network with leading industry experts across all STEM sectors.

Lisa Moran specialises in Communications, Events and Design. She was a member of the winning team for The Irish Education Awards - Student Engagement and Communications Award in 2020, 2018, 2017 and shortlisted for the 2019 award. Lisa was a key member of the team that hosted the European First Year Experience Conference 2019 in CIT and the PASS/PAL Leader Conference in 2017. Lisa has worked in CIT/MTU since 2013 and is currently the Graduate Studies Administrative Coordinator in MTU. Her previous roles were Communications and Events Officer, Alumni Intern and Good Start Ambassador. Lisa led out on the Good Start Induction Programme in CIT 2014 – 2020, developing the programme year on year. Lisa graduated from Cork Institute of Technology in 2013 with a BA in Visual Communications and in 2015 with an MA in Public Relations and New Media. Lisa describes herself as a lifelong learner, she also has a Certificate in Designing Innovative Services, is a trained SI-Pass Supervisor, completed a foundation Coaching in Higher Education course and is a Mentor on the Professional Communications Mentorship Programme for MA in PR & New Media Students.

Melehat Nur Senel, 21 years old, was born in Turkey and raised in Ireland. She is a final year BSc. Honours Interior Architect student at MTU. Melehat was interested in her course because she did art and design in secondary school. Having a sister a year ahead in the same course also encouraged her interest. Melehat went on Erasmus to Turkey in her third year as part of her college course and really loved her time there. She particularly enjoyed experiencing a different education system and culture, and meeting new people.

PAMELA HARDESTY

Pamela Hardesty, BFA, MFA, Irish/American. Pamela's education evolved from an academic focus on art theory at the University of Chicago, to fine art in textiles at the California College of the Arts. She has exhibited widely in glass, metal, paper, plaster, stone, cloth, and thread throughout Ireland and internationally, notably in London, Shanghai, Kaunas, Beijing, Krakow, Graz, Como, Helsinki, and Tokyo; with a 2018 solo exhibition in Norwich Cathedral, UK. Her work is in many public collections, including the Office of Public Works and University College Cork. Pamela passionately promotes the culture of making and particularly of textiles practice, as a published writer, and as a lecturer instigating many exchange projects in textiles, particularly with Baltic universities; as founder of Cork Textiles Network; in her active years of Textiles Education and Research in Europe; and currently, as creator of annual CCAD MAKE Symposia since 2014, bringing eminent makers and academics to Cork for dialogue and connection.

TAYNARA OLIVEIRA

In 2020, Taynara commenced her Ph.D. in Physics under the supervision of Dr. Liam O’Faolain in the Nanophotonics group of Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis (CAPPA). Taynara is currently working on the Integrated Hybrid Lasers for Optical Sensing project and on the Graded Index (GRIN) Lens for output coupling project. Taynara received her first degree in Industrial Automation in 2016 from Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo (IFSP), Brazil. In 2019 she completed her master’s degree in Science from Universidade Tecnológica do Paraná (UTFPR), Brazil where she developed an automated ellipsometer for surface plasmon resonance measurement by optical angulation. Tanya received her MSc. in Electronic Engineering from Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE), Italy, in 2020 as part of her double degree program.
